There were two older school buildings in Quaker Lane outside of this school. On the south side was a classroom size building with an entrance lobby marked on an old map as National School (Boys). Probably due to overcrowding this was our form room for the second year. Heating was a few radiant electric fires high on the wall and you needed to keep your coats on in the winter! On the north side of Quaker Lane just outside the school gate was another building marked as National Schools (Mixed) which was used as the school dining hall. If overcrowding was a problem it was addressed the following year when the first phase of the Broomstick Hall Road School opened to accommodate us third years and the fourth years. The first and second years remained at the old school for the time being but came to the new school to use the sports facilities. Previously the school sports field was along Honey Lane where the school is now and the changing room was what looked like a Nissan Hut.

This building subsequently formed part of King Harold Secondary Modern and contained a number of classrooms. These were separated by wood and glass partitions that were folded back each morning creating a 'hall' for morning assembly then put back so that lessons could commence. Out of shot to the right was a small detached building that was the art room. Behind the photographer were a number of prefab structures forming five more classrooms. One was for wood/metalwork, one music, one domestic science and the remaining two were general classrooms.
